National Poetry Day - LGFL - Take Part

I recently recived this information on National Poetry Day from our LGFL Consultant, Mina Patel:

National Poetry Day - October 8th 2009 –
London Event (and Competition!) by Videoconference hosted by Havering LA


After the huge success of last year’s event, LGfL is once again partnering with Havering LA in promoting this year’s National Poetry Competition and would like to invite you and your schools to take part.

The theme for this year’s Poetry Day is `All about Europe`, since we will be conferencing with schools in Finland, Spain and France. So in order to celebrate this, we would like children to write poems about Europe. We are delighted that poets Michael Rosen, John Hegley and Paul Cookson have been secured to judge the finalists and perform during the one-day video-conference event described below.

We would also like to invite you to take part in a videoconference for primary and secondary schools during National Poetry Day, on October 8th 2009, hosted from Crownfield Junior School, starting at 8.50 am and ending at 3.10pm.

Aldersbrook Make it a Double

We know that Aldersbrook won the Key Stage category of the Redbridge film awards, with that film. but they have now also won again at the BFI on the 14th July.

This is a story that has been reported by both the Ilford Recorder and Guardian, but I was able to speak to both the teacher and the Cine Club who worked with the school about the project and what was involved.

Eleanor from Cine Club elaborates on the award ceremony below:

On Tuesday 14th of July, 450 young people gathered for Cineclub Annual Awards at the BFI Southbank. The London Borough of Redbridge was represented on the shortlist by Aldersbrook Primary School who were nominated in the Best Homage category.

Aldersbrook had been selected for the shortlist for their brilliant first film Empty School which they had made during spring term with the help of a Cineclub filmmaker. Empty School, a creepy mystery story, was influenced by various horror films and also paid direct homage to the film Matilda. The competition was tough with films nominated from across London and the South East from both primary and secondary schools in the Cineclub network. After much deliberation between the judges it was decided to award the Silver Star to Aldersbrook for their amazing grasp of film making techniques and their original take on a classic mystery story.
